چکیده

Fifteen genetically diverse parental genotypes of sunnhemp belonging to different geographical origin were assessed to evaluate general and specific combining ability of parents and cross combinations, respectively, for selecting the superior parent combination. For this, fifteen parents and their 105 F1s were grown in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications and data were collected in respect of plant height, base diameter, green weight, fibre weight, stick weight and fibre percentage. Analyses of variances of diallel revealed that there was predominance of specific combining ability (sca) in almost all the characters except fibre percentage and general combining ability (gca) was significant only in case of plant height. From the gca effect of parents it can be seen that K-12 (B) and SUIN-056 showed good promise as general combiners and able to produce better cross combinations. However only one cross combination viz. SUIN–056 × SUIN–074 was recorded positive sca effects for all the characters. This cross combination along with SUIN–001 × SUIN–056 exhibited positive heterosis over the better parents in all the characters studied and can be used in breeding programme for producing improved sunnhemp population. Further, to exploit fully both additive and nonadditive variances present in this population, random as well as chain crossing among the promising crosses was found effective to exploit both additive and fixable epistatic effects.

Sunnhemp and Millet as Green Manure for Tropical Maize Production

Commonly N release from legume residues is rapid in the tropics. Legume mixtures with grasses can result in slower nutrient release from residues, better matching the N requirements of the following crop. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of the green manures sunnhemp (Crotalaria juncea) and millet (Pennisetum glaucum), alone or mixed, on the performance of a subsequent ...

Prospect and importance of green mulching on the soil status of tropical tasar plantation fields in India

The soils of tropical tasar plantation fields in general are sloppy and are primarily deficient of nutrition due to top soil erosion and constant leaf productivity exploitation to rear tasar silk insect, Antheraea mylitta Drury. The rainfed field of Terminalia tomentosa (W&A) plantation has been evaluated for soil fortification with green mulching through legumes, Sun hemp (Crotalaria juncea), ...

Studies On Genetic Distance Between The Diverse Germplasm In Pearl Millet For Fodder Characters (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.)

Sixty nine pearlmillet germplasm entries of diverse origin were evaluated for seven quantitative characters and three qualitative characters for their per se performance, variability and genetic divergence. Wider variability was observed for fodder yield and its associating characters along with crude protein content. The GCV estimates were observed to be high for number of leaves per plant, nu...

Genetic Architecture of Delayed Senescence, Biomass, and Grain Yield under Drought Stress in Cowpea

The stay-green phenomenon is a key plant trait with wide usage in managing crop production under limited water conditions. This trait enhances delayed senescence, biomass, and grain yield under drought stress. In this study we sought to identify QTLs in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) consistent across experiments conducted in Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Senegal, and the United States of America under li...
